Rock Star Moments

I had a rock star moment last night.  Yes, part of the reason I'm writing about this is to brag, but there's a lesson at the end of the story.  Endulge me.

In "I Was a Teenage Hitler" in The WRONG Show, I had to sing a 1980's rock song about Hitler.  To be heard over the three-piece band, I had to use a microphone (because parts of the song are outside of my current belting range).  I grabbed the mic last night when it was time for the song and knocked the cable out of the bottom.  I picked up the cable and tried to put it back together but gave up after two quick attempts, sucked it up, and belted out the entire song.  Boo-yah.  Of course, the band dropped their volume a bit to accomodate me (and bully on them for doing so).  But I made that song my bitch.  I was a rock star.

We all have rock star moments, like when Billy Bob finally goes for the oop-de-oop play in Varsity Blues, or when Ralph Fiennes goes back to the car to Angela Bassett at the end of Strange Days.  Moments where we can lay it all on the line and hope to hell it turns out okay.  The payoff can be huge.  It's important to be a rock star when those opportunities present themselves.

Tiki Necklace!

You remember how giddy I was about being selected to participate in the Keep A Breast Foundation breast cast project, yes?  I was also giddy about "The Flower Parade," the incredible artwork on my breast cast by Ken Ruzic.  It's whimsical and wild and perfect.

Well, this whole Tiki Oasis thing gets better and better.  I asked ol' friend Sandy Meeks to create a necklace based on the breast cast so I can wear the necklace to the art showing at Tiki Oasis in August.  Sandy crochets amazing art sculpture necklaces from the cashmere yarn that spent a past life as a sweater.  Totally green upcycling stuff.  The vampire bite necklace that was all the rage last summer was her brainchild.

Sandy is phenomenal.  I put the bug in her ear to come up with something for me on Friday.  She decided to sponsor me with this necklace, and I'll make a dress to go with it.  She sent me a photo of it today.  It's absolutely gorgeous and totally captures the spirit of the breast cast.  Her description of her process with this custom piece is below:

I thought about it all weekend while at work, and then spent some time looking at the Tiki Oasis website, I went through the entire gallery of Ken Ruzic, then through photos of you too :)

I went with the green of the tropics, to the oranges and reds of fire (and your amazing hair), and added the coolness of the turquoise blues to represent not only the water, but to hopefully pick up on your eyes.

I noticed in Ruzic's work, it is tribal, with an influence of Art Nouveau (which I totally love).

I also added the tongue element (that is on the painted bust) to the bottom as well :)

The colors look dark and bold in the pic, but are a wee bit less so in life. My camera freaks out when I try to photograph anything with red and orange tones.

Incredible work.  I encourage you to check out Sandy's Etsy store.  Her stuff is very affordable and clever.

Fringe Fest Freaks

Here's a photo of me with the Hollywood Fringe Fest freaks from last week's fundraiser.  (That's a lot of f's in one sentence for me without at least one being a swear.)

I also got a mention on L.A. Theatre Review for my performance at the fundraiser.  I'm very fortunate to be able to support things dear to my heart, and theatre is one of those things.  I encourage you to visit the website for Hollywood Fringe Fest and take in some shows this summer.  You can catch me in The WRONG Show as Eva Braun in "I Was a Teenage Hitler" (and they guy who plays Hitler is so HOT!).

Poetry Brothel at House of Blues Sunset Strip Foundation Room

I'm posting late about this.  I danced at House of Blues Sunset Strip on Saturday night.  It was a great deal of fun, and I got to take Mega Costume out for a spin.  In workshopping a number, there are all sorts of things to work through with a new number.  Each performance points out to me which costume alterations need to be made, which parts of the choreography may need tweaking, and what gets the best audience response.  One great thing I got from this performance was that I really need to get a matching dressing gown for backstage, particularly when I have to parade outdoors on the Sunset Strip in pasties and a G-string on the way from the stage to the dressing room.

The Letter Follies: June Edition

The Letter Follies is a combination of classic and Neo-Burlesque presented for all to enjoy in the comfort of a Topless Gentlemen’s Club.

Some girls wear pasties, some don’t.
Some performers demonstrate skills on the pole, some do not.
Some acts challenge, some acts tease, some acts delight.

All acts are enjoyable, entertaining and demonstrate a mastery of the art of burlesque.

Two shows are presented, one at 10 and one at 11:30 – in between, we encourage you to enjoy the lovely and entertaining ladies of Star Garden. (Bring folding money.)
