Li'l Snappers For All!

Mr. Snapper and I have been making Li'l Snappers to give away when we perform Crocodile Rock since late 2008. We've made hundreds and rehomed them with audience members, and we love hearing tales of the adventures of the Li'l Snappers in different parts of the world. In making so many puppets, we drafted the simplest and best version of the pattern we've used in the past six years.

We're giving it away.

Please use this pattern to make and decorate your own Li'l Snappers when we're performing the show in your town. We love creativity, and we've loved customizing these over the years for every show. (We'll still make them for performances, but making your own is your guaranteed way to get in on the action.)

You can also use this pattern to make your own hand puppets for holiday gifts or puppet shows to get better grades in college language classes. We just ask that you respect the Creative Commons license of the pattern.

Snapper Rewedding: All the Grooms

My Snapper grooms are finally finished.  I used the same process for these that I did for the brides.  I embellished them with tiny plastic top hats.  I had intended to put bowties on them, but I couldn't find ready-made bows that would work.  I tried gluing tiny ribbon bands around the hats, but hot glue is a bit of a disaster when you're working in such a small scale.  I then bought tiny ribbon flowers in hopes I could glue them to the top hats, but they were way too big to look right.  Next to the brides, Andrew thought they look complete enough.  I agree that they make a nice pair.

So how did I make these little finger puppets?  I'll tell you because you never know when you'll need a bunch of tiny finger puppets for a fairly low price.  I turned every glove inside out and ran a line of anti-fray adhesive along the bottom of each finger.  I did one side then the other, then I touched up the sides.  Once the glue was completely dry, I cut each finger on or just below the glue line with scissors.  The job was a bit too delicate for me to use my rotary cutter.  I turned the fingers inside out and hot glued on the features.  It's pretty tough to work with hot glue and such tiny features, so I recommend having plenty of patience as you work through any kind of small scale project like this.

I have one more favor arriving for the favor boxes and I think the wedding favors will be complete.  I located mini takeout boxes in the right colors on Oriental Trading's website that I'll have to order in the coming weeks.  Maybe I can use the ribbon flowers on those.

The Leftover Showgirl

For the BHOF fundraiser last night, Andrew and I donated a pair of pasties and a puppet for the raffle.  Because we're such busy people, I had intended to just give a naked puppet to the raffle.  (I assume that people like to give the puppet a personality first, then accessorize.)  On Wednesday night, naked puppet mostly done, Andrew said we needed to do something to make the puppet more burlesque themed.  His exact words were: "We need to tart the puppet up a bit."  We had one rushed evening to tart up the puppet before the raffle.

I scoured through my box of trim to see what I had on hand that matched fabric I had.  I wound up using leftover painted strips of English net from my panels and a smidge of extra fabric from the larger panels.  The net bra has spare rhinestones from Andrew's disco undies and beaded trim from my fourth burlesque costume ever.  The feathers on her head were from the order I made for my first feather fans back in 2007.  Her eyelashes were from a collection passed to me by Evie.  I cheated and used glues on the costume instead of sewing, but we used thread to tack the costume onto the puppet.

I'm pleased with the Leftover Showgirl.  It's stuff like this that keeps us from throwing away the tiniest bits of leftover fabric and trim.

Here is a smattering (roughly half) of the snapper puppets we're sharing with the audience for Southwest Burlesque Showcase next weekend. I'm really looking forward to the audience participation.
