My First Facebook Ad

For Sunday's Sassy Classy, I decided to buy a Facebook ad.  In my Clark Kent life, I noticed one of my clients bought a Facebook ad to promote an event.  Always seeking new ways to promote, I asked the client if it was successful.  He said it was very successful because he could target the ad to reach certain people.  I then promptly purchased an ad for my show.

I can't say that the ad necessarily increased attendance at my February show.  Most of the folks who RSVPed were people I already knew from life.  However, it did serve as a reminder that the event was happening for those people.  Next time I'll select keywords for my ad that are a little more diverse because I marketed to the people who would likely be there anyway.  It also got the show name and image out there, so next time I'm likely to have even more people there.

Internet Fame

Since I'm the poster girl for Burlesqueland, my image gets stapled to telephone poles throughout the Los Angeles area.  It tickles me to get feedback on those posters.  Chris Beyond found this on Twitter today:
How awesome is that?

The Importance of Mentors

(from my regular people blog June 2, 2009)

I've had the good fortune to study with a number of successful and talented burlesque performers. There's a lot to be said about having good teachers. There's also a lot to be said about having good mentors. My mentors have always been open to answering any questions I had about the business, generously telling me what I wanted to know.

When I was in Boston, I had the pleasure of having lunch with Jo Boobs. I love Jo. She's had more influence over my artistic choices than I'm sure she knows. Back in 2007, I bought her e-book (soon to be a for-realsies book) after a burlesque pole class, and it sent me down the path. I love Jo. Love her. She's smart and has so much artistic integrity.

Anyway, there are things you learn about the world of burlesque (touring, competitions, choices) when you sit down with someone who knows. Those aren't things you typically get out of a class. Those candid conversations are validating and educational. Sit down with a mentor in your field if you get the chance. I felt so good about my pursuits after that lunch. Also, I love Jo.

Boulder Holders

My birthday was this week, so I decided to splurge and get some new bras.  My friend Veranda suggested going to Wizard of Bras in Monrovia.  I have a small frame but I can fill out a sweater, so I have a hard time finding bras that fit.  (I'm also VERY offended when the girls in lingerie stores suggest I buy the "sister size" so the cups fit but the band shifts around.  That's a great way for them to kill a sale.)  Veranda told me I needed to visit the Wizard of Bras.

The way the store works is you go in and fill out a card at the register so they can call for you when they're ready.  They have a waiting room from which they retrieve you when ready.  They take you into a fitting room, measure you and grab a bra for you to try.  I discovered I was two cup sizes bigger than I usually buy!  They check the fit in the back, under the arms and in the front.  Then they bring you a load of bras in that size in the color you want.  You can try on as many as you like.  The prices range from $26 to over $100.  You can wear your bra out of the store if you like.  I splurged and spent $90 on two bras, and I'll definitely go back.

I don't know that I'm at the point in my life that I can afford to spend that much on bras for performance yet, but I know exactly what to look for in a bra fit so I can be smarter about my show bras.  I never knew bras could fit so well!  I highly recommend visiting the shop if you're in Southern California, or hit the site for proper bra fitting techniques if you're not.

The Letter Follies: February Edition

I'm back at Star Garden tonight for two shows.  The 10pm show is perfect for those who don't watch "Lost," and the midnight show is perfect for "Lost" fans.  I'm doing a pole number to a John Mayer song, something you'll never see at another venue.
